If you own a rear-wheel-drive BMW, chances are you've experienced it.
You accelerate hard out of a corner, one rear wheel starts spinning wildly while the other barely contributes, the traction control light flashes, and instead of putting power to the ground, the car simply wastes it.
BMW calls this an open differential. Enthusiasts call it one-wheel-peel.
Whether you drive a BMW 135i, M140i, M240i, 340i, 440i or another non-M performance model, the factory differential is often the biggest limitation once you begin increasing power or driving more aggressively.
A Limited Slip Differential (LSD) completely transforms how the car behaves—not by adding horsepower, but by making better use of the horsepower you already have.
In this guide we'll explain:
Throughout the guide you'll also find our complete video series covering installation, real-world testing and an in-depth showcase of our Fully Forged BMW LSD.
One of the biggest misconceptions is that BMW forgot to install an LSD.
They didn't.
An open differential is cheaper to manufacture, quieter, smoother during parking manoeuvres and perfectly adequate for everyday commuting. For the average driver it performs exactly as intended.
The problem begins the moment one rear tyre loses grip.
An open differential always sends torque through the path of least resistance. If one wheel has less traction, that wheel receives most of the power while the tyre with grip contributes very little.
The result is:
Adding more horsepower doesn't solve this problem. It often makes it worse.
A clutch-type Limited Slip Differential mechanically connects both rear wheels whenever a difference in wheel speed occurs.
Instead of allowing one tyre to spin freely, the differential transfers torque to the wheel that still has grip.
This dramatically improves:
More engine power reaches the road instead of disappearing into wheel spin.
One of the biggest advantages on both road and race track.
The earlier you can apply throttle at corner exit, the faster the car becomes.
Rather than suddenly losing traction on one side, the rear axle behaves more progressively and predictably.
Perhaps the biggest improvement.
The car becomes easier to place, easier to rotate and much more consistent.
Reading specifications is one thing.
Driving the car is another.
That's why we tested our Fully Forged BMW LSD in real-world conditions to demonstrate exactly how much difference it makes.

Many BMW owners believe welded ring gear differentials cannot be upgraded.
Fortunately, that's a myth.
BMW uses a welded ring gear on many modern differentials, including those found in models such as the:
While the installation process differs slightly from traditional bolt-on crown wheels, it is entirely achievable with the correct procedure.
The key steps include:
When performed correctly, the finished assembly is every bit as reliable as the original differential.
To make the process easier, we've filmed the entire installation from start to finish.
The tutorial covers every important step and explains the procedures often omitted from shorter videos.

Not all Limited Slip Differentials are created equal.
Many aftermarket LSDs are fixed in their characteristics.
A motorsport differential should be adjustable.
That's exactly why we developed our Fully Forged BMW LSD.
Rather than building a differential that suits only one application, we designed one that can evolve alongside your car.
The housing is manufactured from forged steel instead of cast material.
Forging produces a denser grain structure with significantly higher strength and fatigue resistance.
For high-horsepower street cars and motorsport applications, this provides exceptional durability under repeated shock loads.
Ramp angles determine how aggressively the differential locks under acceleration and deceleration.
Available configurations include:
Maximum locking during both acceleration and braking.
Ideal for drifting and aggressive motorsport use.
Excellent balance between stability and agility.
Perfect for fast road cars and track-day vehicles.
Smooth engagement with excellent street manners.
Ideal for daily-driven performance cars.
Changing ramp angles completely changes the personality of the differential.
Preload controls the initial locking force before engine torque begins acting on the differential.
Higher preload:
Lower preload:
Because preload is adjustable, the same differential can be tuned for completely different driving styles.
Our design incorporates four or six high-performance clutch packs to provide strong, consistent locking while maintaining excellent durability.
The clutch packs are fully serviceable and designed for motorsport use.
This is perhaps the biggest advantage.
Rather than buying a new differential for every discipline, the setup can be tailored for:
Simply changing ramp configuration and preload allows the differential to behave completely differently.
If you'd like to see every feature explained visually, we've created a detailed product walkthrough.

No. An LSD doesn't create horsepower—it allows you to use more of the horsepower you already have by improving traction.
Absolutely. Even a stock-powered BMW benefits from improved traction, stability and predictability.
Yes. With an appropriate ramp angle and preload setup, a clutch-type LSD can be perfectly civilised for everyday use.
Yes. Our Fully Forged LSD is designed to be adjustable, allowing ramp angles and preload to be modified as your needs evolve.
Not at all. While drift drivers benefit from faster lock-up, track-day enthusiasts, drag racers and spirited road drivers also see substantial improvements.
If you're serious about getting the most from your BMW, a Limited Slip Differential is one of the most transformative upgrades you can make.
More horsepower is exciting, but more traction changes how every horsepower is delivered.
Whether you're installing your first LSD, comparing open and limited-slip differentials, or searching for a fully adjustable motorsport solution, we hope this guide has answered your questions.
